With immediate effect I am beginning to keep a record of my comings and goings and maintain notes of the things I do each day in an attempt to illustrate the advantages and difficulties of a Work from home business. I work from home as an author and this often works really well, but I need to be certain I have long periods of concentration so I can complete my work within deadline. And by deciding to diarise in this way I have of course appended another modest writing duty to my daily to do list.
I will record the days happenings as the last task each day, this will need extra discipline. However discipline is what the work from home situation is all about. Often I am working alone, with no co workers to give support for what you are trying to do.
Today was rather unremarkable. Getting up fairly early is always a flying start and a 7 a.m. rising time got me at my computer before 8 a.m. Usually I need to do in the region of six hours of effort, today was as normal. I do Online jobs quite a lot, mainly contributing to numerous blogs. Today I also had some brochure copy to come up with for a customer. This detained me in my study well into the afternoon.
Had very few e mails today, non warranted action and the weather was pleasant, warm and sunny, so I carried out a couple of hours cutting the grass. Everyday manual tasks give the brain a break so this is useful thinking time. Ideas occur to me when I’m doing routine jobs, so I am able to justify my retreat to the outdoors. Wenever I do this I keep a notepad with me so I can jott down any good thoughts.
I didn’t leave the house today, no errands to run or meetings to go to, so the car didn’t move and I used no fuel. Good for the environment. And my final task today is to record this log entry, to be completed by 6.30 p.m.
