In past times, people decided on a given career path at an early stage, undertook the specified study for it, and after that stayed in the same field (and sometimes the same company) until they retired. Things have altered since then, with more and more people making a career change in mid-life. Undoubtedly the older people are, the tougher it gets to switch to a different walk of life, yet on the other hand, they may have more savings to help tide them over a probable short-term pay cut that change of direction requires. The developing area of Internet business has created a new class of online jobs, which people from many previous occupations can adjust to easily, particularly since they enable people to work from home.
There are perhaps numerous reasons why people decide to try out a different career. In some cases, somebody might have been pressured by their family into taking up a given line of work, for example, a father might expect his son to take up his own profession. It may not, though, be what they are particularly good at doing, and eventually, they might choose move to the occupation they genuinely hope to work in. There are others who might take up a secure 9-5 occupation, and pursue their genuine passion – in music or acting, for example – in the evening. If they become successful, they are free to discard their safe but uninspiring occupation.
A more widespread reason these days, is that people discover that in fact they do not take pleasure in their chosen profession. This may be because it wasn’t what they expected. For example, I have met a lot of formerly in the teaching profession who decided to leave teaching because they could do little about the discipline problems in today’s schools.
In addition, we cannot ignore the financial angle. There are many occupations which are fascinating to pursue, for example in academic research, but they do not pay very well and the positions are often short-term or temporary. If you’re trying to raise children, the lure of a better paid career in a less interesting area is difficult to resist. The way somebody has described the situation to myself, job satisfaction is all very well, but it’s little consolation if you are trying to raise a family on a minimal wage and your children need food and clothing. At the other extreme, some people leave well-paid jobs so that they can pursue a low paid yet more interesting career, or to take up a chance to work from home and cut out the stress of city life.
An increasingly frequent and involuntary cause of a job change is losing your job. People who are laid off may take the opportunity to make use of their redundancy money to start up a self-employed business. In many cases it could be doing the same as the work they had done before, but often it is a totally new line of work. By way of example, an acquaintance, laid off from a civil service position, set up his own antiques showroom.
With the invention of the WWW, there is a large number of Internet business opportunities that can be taken up by those seeking to leave their current occupation or who have been made redundant. These are ‘online jobs’ since people can work from home and connect to customers by way of the WWW. A few who have never worked with computers might be apprehensive that they do not have the computing skills to accept these opportunities, however it is possible to get training and many find they take naturally to computer skills. Whether people are unhappy in their present career and want a new occupation, or find themselves in a declining industry and are hoping for new career paths, the online jobs to be found in Internet business can give people a genuine chance to start afresh.
